OTDR Testers

Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) is a tool used for fiber optic testing. The OTDR shoots a laser light down the optical cable and the laser emits a pulse of light at a specific wavelength, this pulse of light travels along the fiber being tested, as the pulse moves down the fiber portions of the transmitted light are reflected/refracted or scattered back down the fiber to the photo detector in the OTDR. This tests the integrity of a fiber cable and is used for the building, certifying, maintaining, and troubleshooting fiber optic systems. The OTDR test can identify "events" an event can be a bend in the fiber or a break in the fiber. Events can also be identified as connection points. Basically any "event" (connection points, bends, or splices or breaks) in the transmission of the laser signal in the fiber optic run can be identified to within inches of the cable run. This is very beneficial in identifying were exactly in the fiber run a problem may be occurring. OTDR's build a virtual image of the fiber optic cable to determine the condition and performance capability of the fiber cable.
